Do you feel confident comparing and choosing between the different paper types?  Can you recommend the most suitable paper for a particular job?  Can you calculate a book's bulk and spine measurement? Do you know how to avoid problems associated with certain papers?  

This fascinating and informative one day course will give you the answers to all these questions and more! 

We start by looking at the paper making process - from the pulp used to the coating process.  We cover all the generic paper types and look at their different technical qualities including opacity, volume, brightness.  You will also learn how to make simple paper calculations and the importance of paper grain and the associated problems of getting it wrong.  

Throughout the day you will build the practical skills and confidence to help you make the right paper buying decisions that will ultimately enhance your books.   The course has recently been updated to incorporate more on the environmental issues surrounding paper and includes updates on new legislation including FLEGT and the Lacey Act.
